Continuing Professional Development: Why I Choose to Keep Learning

As a DVSA Approved Driving Instructor, my role is about much more than preparing people to pass a driving test. It’s about helping learners develop the skills, awareness, and confidence to drive safely for life.

That’s why I regularly invest in Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Most recently, I’ve booked further training to build on my own knowledge and skills.

The Driving Instructors Association Code of Conduct, which I voluntarily adhere to, makes it clear: instructors should continue their professional development to the best of their ability. I believe in setting the best example for my pupils, so I hold myself to that standard.

Why CPD Matters

- For instructors: CPD ensures we stay sharp, up to date, and reflective about our teaching.

- For learners: it shows that learning never stops, even for the teacher.

- For road safety: better instructors mean better drivers, and better drivers mean safer roads.

The Myth About “Learning After the Test”

I often hear people say: “You only start learning to drive after you’ve passed your test.”

In truth, that idea usually comes from people who were only ever taught to scrape through the test, not to drive safely for life. If you’re taught properly, you start learning to be a safe driver from your very first lesson. Passing the test isn’t the beginning of learning — it’s the point where you take full responsibility for continuing it.

Driving as a Lifelong Skill

A good driver continually evaluates, adapts, and improves every single day they’re on the road. That’s the mindset I want to pass on to my learners: driving is a lifelong skill, not a one‑off achievement.

By investing in my own CPD, I’m not just improving as an instructor. I’m modelling the same principle I expect from every safe driver: keep learning, keep improving, keep driving well.
